Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults

Gárda Vetting Blitz

"V" Day for Gárda Vetting of Volunteers: After all Masses on the weekend of 29th/30th April our safeguarding representatives will be in the room at the back of the church to help parish volunteers check whether they need to be Gárda vetted/re-vetted and if they do, to give them the vetting forms and information page necessary for this.  Parish volunteers who need to be Gárda vetted can then return the completed forms and other necessary documents either after 6.00.p.m. Mass on Saturday, 6th April or after 12.00.p.m. Mass on Sunday 7th April and have them copied and signed off by Fr. Peter.

Safeguarding Information Meeting

"Knowledge is Power": All parish volunteers, regardless of whether they deal directly with children or not, are now required to attend one safeguarding information meeting.  For any volunteers who were not able to attend one of our three previous safeguarding information meetings, and because this is urgent, there will be one more such meeting on Wednesday 10th May at 8.00.p.m. in the church.

Children and Vulnerable Adults are a gift from God

We in the Parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel value and encourage the participation of children and young people at an appropriate level in Parish activities that enhance their spiritual, physical, emotional and social development. We also treasure the participation of vulnerable adults at an appropriate level in parish life.  We recognise the dignity and rights of all children and vulnerable adults and are committed to ensuring their protection and support. In keeping with this we will do all in our power to create a safe environment for children and young people and for vulnerable adults in order to secure their protection and enable their fullest possible participation in the life of our parish.

Training and Information Evenings

We had two information evenings for parish volunteers on safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults presented by Garry Kehoe of the Dublin Archdiocesan Safguarding Office, one on Wed 14th September and one on Tue 20th September.  Parish volunteers were invited to attend one of these information evenings, which took place in the parish church.  We held a further information evening on November 28th to accommodate those who could not attend on either date.  To date over 80 parish volunteers have attended these very enlightening safeguarding information sessions and many found the experience a real "eye opener."

Our full-day training for parish clergy, staff and those dealing directly with children for the parishes of Knocklyon and Firhouse took place on Saturday November 12th in the Iona Centre, Knocklyon.  Gary Kehoe was again our presenter.  Five people attended from Firhouse parish.

We hope to carry out a full Parish audit of our safeguarding policies and procedures early in the new year.
